Ceramic mask, 'Shipibo'

Working in ceramic, Teofilo Aylas creates a mask to represent a Shipibo man. The Shipibo are a Panoan-speaking Indian group living on the upper Ucayali River near the headwaters of the Amazon. They were only minimally influenced by the Inca Empire and met Spanish missionaries with great resistance. Although they maintain much of their original way of life, they have also adapted some contemporary urban customs.
