Ewe wood mask, 'Afenyo'
His long, slender visage slopes downward to a narrow chin. Wide eyes slant upward beneath furrowed brows, repeating the diagonal lines, and his full lips are solemn beneath his flaring nostrils. Styled and beautiful, this exquisite mask by Ralph Agudze is regal in its pose. Sculpted of naturally dried sese wood, it is embellished with applications of textured brass and copper. Dark tan and mansion polish add color and protect the wood. Infused with Ghanaian tradition, this mask makes an inspired gift for the West African art collector. Afenyo means, "home, sweet home" in the Ewe language. Driven by a passion for the arts since childhood, Ralph Kwasi Agudze learned to carve in a few short months. He intuitively creates each work as a testimony to West African culture.
